As the Aam Aadmi Party took the battle to Rahul Gandhi's home turf of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, protesters waved black flags, hurled ink and threw stones at buses carrying the party's supporters. Kumar Vishwas, who has challenged Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi to a triangular fight in Amethi, vowed to bring an end to the era of dynasty politics. Forget princes, give the‘naukar’ chance, says AAP's Vishwas

Aam Aadmi Party leader Kumar Vishwas on Sunday said the Congress has failed the people of Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, and that Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi never raised the problems of his constituency in Parliament even once.

"Rahul Gandhi, prior to elections, turns up in Amethi seeking votes, but when the time comes to work for the people there, he never pays heed," Vishwas said, addressing a public rally in Amethi, about 140km from state capital Lucknow.

The poet-turned-politician said it was time to give a ‘naukar’ (servant) the chance after bringing several generations of ‘yuvrajs’ (princes) to power. "Amethi has to decide now. I am an 'aam aadmi' and he (Rahul Gandhi) is a prince. If Amethi wants, it can get rid of dynasty politics. Winning and losing is not the point, but what is important is we are challenging dynastic politics and corruption," the 43-year-old leader said.

Vishwas said Rahul Gandhi would spend nights in Amethi to win the sympathy of people in his constituency, but that alone would not solve their problems.

"There are a lot of other problems to which Rahul has paid no heed," he said, explaining that he was firmly resolved to contest the next Lok Sabha elections from Amethi.

Earlier on the day, Vishwas was shown black flags by a group of people, who were protesting against his purported remarks against a religious event, while he was heading to Amethi.

Stones and eggs were also thrown at two buses ferrying party supporters to the rally venue, in Gandhi Chowk area of the city.

Window panes of the buses got damaged due to the stone pelting and police resorted to mild force to control the mob after which the buses left for the rally venue.

Vishwas, when asked about the protests, said these were "sponsored" and he would defeat Rahul Gandhi with a "huge margin" in the Lok Sabha polls.

The poet-turned politician was shown black flags by the protesters, who also raised slogans against him, while he was passing through Jagdishpur area along with his supporters.

They also burnt effigy of the AAP leader and said that a person, who does not respect religious sentiments, would not be accepted in Amethi.

Vishwas has already tendered his apology about the comment on the religious event.

Vishwas was greeted with black flags in Jagdishpur area also.

At 10.50am, a group of men waving black flags and shouting slogans against Kumar Vishwas had assembled on the road as the AAP fleet escorting Vishwas and party's spokesperson Sanjay Singh passed Kamrauli in Jagdishpur area, 50 kilomters ahead of the rally venue in Amethi.

The protestors claimed that they didn't belong to any organisation and were irked by Vishwas for hurting their religious sentiments.

"We will not let someone rule us who has ridiculed Imam Hussain and Bhagwan Shiva in his poetry," a protestor Ali Rizvi said. 

A shoe hurling attempt was also averted by police at the site.

To a query on protest at his press conference on Saturday, Vishwas said: "What is the protest all about? Is it because that Amethi's dynasty politics should not be challenged or is it about the poems that I have read which had hurt the sentiments of certain community, for which I have already apologized."

Vishwas on Saturday said if reports that Rahul Gandhi was mulling contesting Lok Sabha polls from both Chikmagalur and Amethi were true, then it would be deemed that he had conceded defeat even before the contest.

The AAP leader also said that his party would field the "best candidate" against BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, though it would take some time.
 
Speaking ahead of the event on Saturday, Vishwas said that he expected it to be disrupted by activists of other political parties, including possibly the Congress and the Samajwadi Party.

On Saturday, a man, identified later as Saif Jafari, threw an egg in the direction of Vishwas and waived a paper stating that the latter had hurt religious sentiments of both majority and minority communities and it "will not be tolerated".
 
Jafari, a native of Bijnore, was later nabbed by AAP workers and handed over to the police.
 
Vishwas described the incident as a political conspiracy of opposition parties which feel threatened by the growing popularity of the AAP.
 
"If these (opposition) political parties think that by throwing eggs, inks, organising attacks they can win elections they should better look towards Delhi," he said.
 
Vishwas was addressing the press conference after presiding over a function in which over 2000 traders joined the AAP in Lucknow.
 
Even though the AAP will release its first list of candidates for the 2014 general elections after January 15, party sources said Vishwas is most likely to contest from Amethi.

Bangalore: Why software professionals & MBA grads are hitching onto the AAP bandwagon

The Aam Aadmi Party headquarters in Bangalore is a scene of bustling activity. Nestled in a narrow dusty lane, a few steps away from the Cottonpet police station in central Bangalore, the head office sees at least 300-500 visitors every day, some curious and others hungry for change. Enthused by Arvind Kejriwal's victory in Delhi, Bangaloreans are attending AAP meetings across the city and signing up in droves to join the party. "Anybody is better than the people we have had so far.

The rise of AAP has put an end to the belief that we have only BJP and Congress to vote for," said Nitya Rao, a 31-year-old freelance photographer who attended an AAP event in the posh Koramangala area last week. She said she would sign up as member and volunteer for the party. V Balakrishnan, former board member at Infosys, and GR Gopinath, founder of the erstwhile Air Deccan, have been the two recent high-profile AAP inductees.

"Going by the evidence of hundreds and thousands of people rushing to join the party, Bangalore will send a few AAP candidates to parliament," says Gopinath, who has offered time and support to the party, not revealing if he was going to contest himself.

Prithvi Reddy, one of the founding members of AAP and a part of the national executive, said Balakrishnan was helping them with the information technology infrastructure, building the organization and raising funds. The former Infosys executive has told Reddy that he has not yet given any thought about contesting the Lok Sabha election.

Online registrations have exceeded 50,000 in Karnataka, with over half of them joining post the Delhi election. Offline memberships are yet to be tabulated. "It is one of the states with the largest membership base," said Siddharth Sharma, a former journalist and convener of AAP Karnataka. Although the exact number of members for Bangalore is yet to be tabulated , at least 1,000-1,500 people become members every day in the city, the party said.

Mass Campaign

A typical day at the borrowed office space in Bangalore, located on the third floor of a nondescript building, sees party workers coordinating over the phone with volunteers across Karnataka. 

"We ordered 48,000 caps a week ago. Just about 5,000 are left. We've ordered 1 lakh more," said Manjunath K, a software professional who handles logistics for AAP in Karnataka, and finds campaigning much easier post the election in Delhi. Manjunath plays AAP ambassador by travelling on different routes in the most crowded public buses, with the AAP cap firmly fixed on his head.

"I don't even have to talk. I simply stand on the footboard," said the full-time volunteer. He says the cap triggers a debate about AAP, its feasibility of being successful in Karnataka and by the end of the journey, about a dozen passengers become members. The Bangalore team has appointed representatives across all its 27 constituencies and most of them have active Facebook pages. Their profiles range from ex-military professionals to software professionals and MBA graduates. Door-todoor campaigning would start next week.

Volunteers in the city, about 12,000 of them, visit parks in the mornings and evenings. Membership drives have been conducted in several areas of the city. On a busy Sunday afternoon, Pavan Hegde, a 23-year-old worker at Cafe Coffee Day, marched into the crowded Maiyya's restaurant in Jayanagar along with other volunteers, and walked out with 185 new members in the next hour.

The city played a major role in the Delhi election, said Chandrakant KN, treasurer of AAP Karnataka. The state's contribution of Rs 4 crore, from 70,000 donors, was second only to Delhi.

"And the bulk of it came from Bangalore," said the former general manager of State Bank of India. Additionally, a 15-member team from Bangalore single-handedly managed the task of ensuring 16 lakh registered members of Delhi cast their votes, according to Chandrakant, who said fundraising for Lok Sabha

elections from Karnataka is yet to formally start. According to the information on its website, the party had a balance of Rs 3,65,586 as of November.

Ranks Keep Swelling

But the party is not without its problems. "The biggest challenge is to keep up with the jump in memberships, given the long procedure we currently have," said Chandrakant. To cope with steadily increasing demand across the nation, the party is expected to scrap the `10 membership fee.

It has rolled out a system of enrolling members through 'missed calls' which will be returned. This will run until January 26.

The party said it is also in need of skilled professionals to help them with publicity, song- and script-writing, acting and graphic designing. Additionally, efforts are being made to connect with the rural parts.

"More or less, people perceive us as an urban-centric party," said convener Sharma. "We are right now focusing on the rural hinterland; in Bangalore our teams are already in place." But overall, the consensus is that Bangaloreans want change. "I am happy to see that AAP has at least rocked the boat. It has put fear of God in the old parties," said Kanwal Rekhi, an IT entrepreneur, mentor and managing director of venture capital firm Inventus Partners.

Narendra Modi supporter Kiran Bedi tells Arvind Kejriwal to not govern from roof-tops

Former team Anna member and Arvind Kejriwal’s colleague during Jan Lokpal agitation, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi Saturday asked Kejriwal and his team to not run governance from “rooftops” and take time to listen and absorb grievances before taking decisions.

Bedi, who has openly come out in support of BJP leader Narendra Modi’s candidature for Prime Ministerial post citing his governance records, also said “governance demands solid maturity” and “not street always.”

“For God's sake, Arvind and Team, Secretariats are not run from Roof Tops! Pl(ease) take time to listen/absorb! And then take considered decisions!,” Bedi tweeted Saturday.

Kejriwal’s Janta Darbar was suspened due to mismanagement of the large crowd that arrived there.

However, Kejriwal’s experiment of meeting people directly to listen their grievances will continue. He has already promised to hold Janta darbar within a week with better management for handling crowd.

Arvind Kejriwal's helpline effect: Cops arrested for demanding 'hafta'

New Delhi:  Three days after the launch of an anti-corruption helpline by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, two constables were arrested today on charges of extortion by the vigilance department following a sting operation by a vendor.

Two constables identified as Ishwar Singh and Sandeep Kumar from the Janakpuri police station were nabbed following a trap laid by the anti-corruption branch officials near a discom office in the area, Rajendra Kumar, Secretary to Chief Minister, said.

Mr Kumar said that a complaint was registered on the helpline by a sweater seller in the area regarding police constables demanding 'hafta' (extortion money) from them.

"He performed a sting operation and gave it to the anti-corruption department following which the trap was laid and the two constables were arrested. However, probe has been initiated to confirm if there is any involvement of the senior staff of the police station in this regard," Mr Kumar said.

The two constables had allegedly taken Rs. 3,000 from the vendor, who is also associated with an NGO, last month and were demanding the same amount from him again.

Yesterday, a staff of an Assistant Registrar in the Co-operative Group Housing Societies at Parliament Street was allegedly caught taking a bribe following a complaint to the helpline. However, the assistant registrar fled from the spot.

"Whenever he is traced, he will be arrested," Arvind Kejriwal had said.

Delhi government yesterday had introduced 1031 - an easy to remember anti-corruption helpline number - replacing the eight-digit number launched two days back which received a whopping 23,500 calls.

The new helpline number - the first in the country - was announced by Mr Kejriwal at a press conference.

On Wednesday, Mr Kejriwal had introduced 011-27357169 as the first anti-corruption helpline.

Today, the helpline received 11,952 calls from 8 AM till 6.30 PM out of which 54 were just normal complaints and "around 20 cases as of now ripe for laying trap", sources said.

According to sources, there are 60 lines of the helpline and 30 officials supervise them and take calls.

Aam Aadmi Party putting cases against Congress ministers on backburner: BJP...

BJP leaders alleged that most of the promises made by AAP remain unfulfilled.

Accusing Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government of putting the cases against former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her ministers on the backburner, BJP today said it will hold a sit-in at Rajghat tomorrow to expose the ruling party's "anti-national" and "anti-people policies".

"We will hold a dharna at Rajghat tomorrow to highlight the anti-national and anti-people policies of AAP. Supporting referendum in Kashmir, raising doubts over Batla House encounter and now protecting Congress' leaders in Delhi from corruption charges are a clear evidence of the opportunism of AAP," a BJP statement said today.

Addressing a joint press conference here today, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel and former Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta said "the details of corruption done by Congress ministers and their Chief Minister are there in the CAG reports, Shunglu Committee report and the judgments given by Lokayukta." "What more proof is required for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to move against them"? said Goel.

"The fact is that after AAP formed an alliance with Congress to come to power, it has decided to put cases against Congress' former ministers and the former CM on backburner.

"Otherwise, there is no reason that even a single complaint has not been lodged against any of them during the last 10 days", he said.

"It is the same Arvind Kejriwal who had come out with a 370-page charge sheet against Congress. Had he really been honest about catching the big fish, he should have a lodged case against the former Congress ministers and the Chief Minister during the last 10 days but instead, he is skirting the issue now by saying that the cases will be filed only after someone gives the proof of graft by the Congress leaders."

The two leaders alleged that most of the promises made by AAP remain unfulfilled.

"It has failed to check the rising prices in the city. In fact to add to woes of the people, it has hiked water tariff by 10 per cent and has not been able to do anything on roll back of CNG promises despite making promises," they said.

The power tariff has been reduced for a limited number of people while the promise was that reduction would be across the board, BJP said adding "in fact, ever since the AAP-Congress alliance government has come to power, Delhiites are reeling under the pressure of price rise".

There has been increase in water tariff, CNG prices and LPG prices. Neither AAP nor Congress has made any move to provide respite to people of Delhi, they alleged.

Accusing the AAP ministers of being "arrogant", Goel alleged what they preach and practice does not match.

"We all know AAP ministers are behaving in an arrogant manner. They have taken cars with VIP numbers, their chief minister was forced to quit a set of duplex after public furore while another minister has taken two houses.

"It is very likely that other ministers will also take government accommodations. It is clear that what they preach and practice does not match," he said.
